sorry to take this on a tangent, but for bad, and i mean worse than bad stream of consciousness ninja movies, could you please do a review on 9 1/2 ninjas? if you can’t find it i’ll mail you a copy

I rember getting this out of the local video shop, watching up to where Kosugi fights several midgets.Must have been boring because I can’t remember what followes.Must have dropped off to sleep.Not one of his best flicks.Revenge &
Pray for death were the best.

Actually, this site went up a couple of months after I saw Grindhouse so it felt a little late in the game to write a review. I loved the movie, though. I’m really suspicious of QT because I don’t much care for his writing but the Rodriguez half of the movie and the fake trailers were the shit. I’m also a fanatic for the guys at Working Title and I desperately hope that the rumors about them actually producing Don’t are true.

As for Death Proof, I liked it quite a bit. I’m a car chase buff and even though I didn’t review Grindhouse, the movie inspired me to review Vanishing Point. It took too long to get rolling, I thought, but the chase and the stunts were great and Kurt Russel is always welcome in my book.

If you search out Grindhouse on the site, I think the only thing you’ll turn up is the recent news about the two separate DVD releases, which is a huge bummer.

I found the image but it didn’t sit well as wallpaper, so I’ve got Tarantino’s Death Proof all fat and stretched- it looks cool.
I googled the Kosugi’s and found on IMDb that Steven De Souza (who I had forgotten about) has written and is shooting Return of the Ninja in ‘08, with Sho as the only attached star so far. De Souza is also listed as belonging to only a handful of screenwriters who’ve made over 2 Billion at the box office.
What are your thoughts on QT and Rodgriguez’s Grindhouse? I’ll search your reviews after this post.

Hi, Matt. Thanks for coming by. I never knew the spoof about ninjas bit, but it makes a lot sense. 9 Deaths of the Ninja is fucking insane. I sound like a crazy person when I tell friends about it. Most of them think I’m improving about some imaginary movie since the whole thing is so stream of conscious.

Kane Kosugi does a lot in Asia. I can’t think of anything I’ve seen him in but I know he was in that recent Jet Li flick War. His presence is hardly enough to get me to see that since I can’t stand Corey Yuen, but it’s still cool as hell.

Did you ever find that poster?

Hey Brian,

I love your review (my 2nd post of the night- I must sleep). I don’t bullshit when I tell you that I searched for a 9 Deaths posters online yesterday in order to make it my desktop background.
My brother worked at a video store when this film came out and I begged him to get me the poster (I was 9 or 10). My friends and I loved Sho Kosugi, and how cool is that poster — a Ninja, and a Quick Kick lookalike, and that title- awesome. But the film sucked large.
Anyway, when I was searching for the desktop image I learned that 9 deaths was made to purposely lampoon ninja movies, something obviously uncool and over our 3 foot heads at the time. As a side note I learned a couple of years ago that Kane Kosugi is a huge celebrity in Japan to this day. I’m going to google his and his dad’s name now.
Later, and thanks. I’ll skip out on the 9 deaths rental and pick-up Revenge of the Ninja instead.
