I don't know why they allow Billy Mithchell's scores. He hasn't played in a public forum in forever. If he's really playing these games he should come out and play Steve. But he won't since he's a loser. Hear that Billy? You are a loser.

Not really, but sort of.

Wiebe's first score of > 1million threatens to unseat Billy Mitchell's 20+ years score. Mitchell is a long time member of the Twin Galaxies staff, the alpha dog among that pack, has a long history with those guys and was also named gamer of the century, so taking down his score on what is considered the toughest test of gaming mettle is a really big deal. Wiebe didn't just beat it, either, he destoryed it. So Twin Galaxies sent these two guys out to inspect the machine he played on and part of it was checking the circuit board for hacks or anything funny.

Early on, they show him playing and he illustrates some of the tricks you can do to stay alive. Barrel control is one of them.

Also, the best way to honestly set a record with Twin Galaxies/Guinness is to go to Funspot here in New Hampshire and do it on their macine which is an original issue Donkey Kong game where you can control the barrels and any number of other exploits.

I know that Twin Galaxies has certain rule stipulations these days depending on the game. Mitchell and others who set Centipede scores did it with the "trap" technique, which you're not allowed to do anymore by Twin Galaxies standards.

Why do I know this? I have no idea.

Okay--I was there when Donkey Kong first came out. And I quickly learned that if Mario kept his hand on TOP of the ladder in the "barrel" stages, the barrels would roll over his head and not fall down on him.

But too many people caught on to that, so they started "fixing" the machines to prevent this trick.

I have to wonder which version our heroes played--were they even the same ones? Is this vital issue addressed?

actually at auction you can pick up games very reasonable. I only paid $100 for my total carnage coin-op. Most games go for around $200-$300. I'd never buy from a dealer, they ask way way too much for a coin-op.

As an addendum. I'm periodically seized with the emulation bug. It's nothing like having the real thing in front of you, but a copy of MAME and my favorite ROMs are always a good thing. Right about now I can feel it gnawing at me again. I'll probably download the latest version of MAME and raid some newsgroups for ROMs. There's also a Pinball emulator called PinMAME that is considerably bigger than the economically sized MAME and it's associated games. PinMAME emulates the look of all your favorite tables with good ball physics. It's a great replacement on your desktop. I think they have versions of all of these running under Windows, Mac OS and Linux now.

I had a friend with a C64 and what seemed like hundreds of copied games. I wanted one so badly. In 1986 my dad bought an IBM PC but this was way before they were anything but business machines. Several times more powerful than a Commodore computer, but all I gave a shit about was games and my only options at the time were Infocom text adventures, which I liked, but the C64 and it's pretty, pretty graphics had me in a trance. I never got one despite all my begging.

Steve, I envy you. I would kill for a coin op machine around here. A pinball machine even. My all time favorite pinball is also Twilight Zone followed closely by The Addam's Family. Those dot matrix games with the tables loaded with targets were so much fun. As for my favorite coin-op, I wouldn't even know where to begin. There was a period in time not too long ago when I was helplessly addicted to Pac Man. Defender, Centipede and Missile Command are also high on the list. Tron was great just for Light Cycles. And that's just classic era. Then there's Mortal Kombat 2 and Super Street Fighter 2: Hyper Fighting. I really need to get down and think about this.

As cheap as these games can be, it's still a hard sell on my wife. It's hard enough justifying the typical $60 for a new 360 game to her, I couldn't imagine trying to convince her that $1000 on a Defender machine in good condition is a worthy investment.

I own a couple old pinball games and arcade machines. Love to play them just for nostalgia. You can actually pick games up very cheap at auctions. A regular one I got to is www.pinballatthezoo.com. My favorite videogame of all time...probably Tron. Best pinball machine "Twilight Zone" though I"m keeping an eye out for getting "Attack from Mars" yes it's a b-movie pinball machine. Could that be more perfect.
