I've always wondered the same thing and he never addresses it. Not even in the commentary track. Then again, you look at that Bridge set and it's barely big enough to get a single lane of traffic through, so I guess you takes the good with the bad.

Great Film, still great after all these years. Just one question.

Why did Carpenter make such a huge gaffee with the bridge? Every one knows it is the 59th street bridge and not the 69th street bridge. hell, Paul Simon even wrote a song about it!

Right about the soundtracks, Grebo. It was worth nine bucks to me. No one mentioned the deleted scene that explains how Snake got caught. It is interesting how something so tame could also be the most badass thing ever. Kind of like the canned food scheme at the beginning of the Stainless Steel Rat. As for Carpenter's best--EFNY, Halloween, They Live and Assault all pale besides the brilliance of The Thing. I've probably watched Assault about 20 times more though. And I love the bloody Shoggoth-hell out of In the Mouth of Madness. It's the only movie I've watched in the last couple years that made me check over my shoulders in fear for my safety.

Sorry fellas. This is a good film, but if we're going to talk about Carpenter's repertoire, this does not even come close to THE THING, which is one of my favorite films, so I guess that makes me biased. But then again, the reviewer stated EFNY is his favorite, so that probably makes him biased, too. It's a good film, but I think it gets old after the first viewing. Again, as far as Carpenter movies go, this is not as good as HALLOWEEN, THEY LIVE, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 or BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. And going even beyond Carpenter, I could name dozens of movies that I think are better than ESCAPE. But that's just my opinion.

The score is amazing though, I will agree. Love the main title.

Easily one of my all-time favourite movies (if not #1 on the list!).
I snuck-into see this movie twice in 1981 when it was released, and once it came out on video, I would re-watch it again and again and again and...
It's fantastic, holds-up 100% even today. Great action, amazing characters, pointed social commentary, and a bloody AMAZING score.

BTW for what it's worht, the SILVA-release of the soundtrack doesn't contain the original music tracks-- hunt down the shorter (but much better) Varase Sarabande CD, which has Carpenter's original music cues as featured in the film.

According to Tarantino, Snake was the sole reason Kurt Russell was cast as Stuntman Mike, though I see a lot more of Jack Burton (Big Trouble In Little China) in that character

I watched this movie for the first time last night... (thank you netflix) and it was totally amazing and awesome!!!! I absolutely loved how "dated" the movie was. In terms of all the old technology that was used. The old computers, the old LCDs, the gigantic computer tracking device bracelets that were used, the fact that the President had a "cassette tape" in his briefcase. How about that escape pod thing? lol.... Can you imagine if the Air Force One really had some red circular escape pod thing like that... lol !!!! Thanks again for the review! I had a great time watching this film (while studying for my GMAT). Its funny.. i live right across the Hudson River from Manhattan. And if there really was a large wall that circled Manhattan Island... that wall would go right across my front yard. It was fun to imagine that scenario. There was a great similarity between the Snake character and the character that was in the movie Deathproof...
