I am big fan of Cronenberg and this is really one of his finest moments. He contunues to grow as a filmmaker even today even though many still consider or at least remember him as some horror movie director. His cameo in Jason X ranks up there with Miike's in Hostel. Love your site man Im gonna add a link to it on my blog!

Videodrome is the apex of excellence, surrounded of course by the nebulous power of 'The Holy Mountain.' Bryan, if you haven't seen that, it will change your life. It is overbearingly aggressive and thought-provoking and at the end turns out to be the sickest joke ever played on filmgoers. Scratch that, film producers. I can imagine them seeing the final product and erupting into fury at Alejandro Jodorowsky. Also, how do you feel about Escape from LA? I love the hell out of it.

I just watched Videodrome (not the first time) and remembered I'd grabbed a postcard-esque flyer for this website at Market Street Eats in Portland, Maine. Very cool site, and great review. I'm a bit younger than you (the review, posted last year, has you referencing being 31, while I am now 35), so I didn't really start becoming aware of things and able to formulate them as part of my childhood until the late 80's at the earliest and mostly until the early 90's. I'm speaking specifically of things like video box covers, random insanely violent things I would find on cable TV, and seeing movies or previews for movies that were so bizarre that even though I don't know the names to half of them, I feel like they contributed to who I am today (seeing the VHS cover of The Fly II is an example. also seeing the horrid movie "The Video Dead" seemingly completely uncut on cable). The movies you review are ones that I may not have grown up watching, but have ended up seeing over the course of time due to being tempted by the names, box art, or stories about them since far before I was old enough to see them, or mature enough to handle them.

JC4President,

That's awesome you've just recently experienced the greatness of Escape from New York. It's truly one of John Carpenter's best films. and I can bet money your girlfriend will just watch one of your b-movies and will never watch another one again. My wife as a birthday present finally watched "The Warriors" with me. I would put in my top 5 movies as must see b-movie films. Shockingly she was bored by it!! How can someone be bored by "The Warriors"? She said she doesn't want to watch any more b-movies after that. Just rom-coms for her UGH!! My goal is to get her to watch "DeathProof" as I can sell that as a feminist movie which it is. Anyways sorry sidetracked. Videodrome, great film and very cutting edge for the time. Cronnenberg loves to combine twisted visions of sex and violence. Checkout some his other early films like Shivers, or Rabid. I Agree Bryan does awesome reviews. His site and badmovies.org are my regular visits. I write a little b-movie blog over at dchighway.com Bryan posts on there so we chat back and forth. Nice to see another b-movie fan.

Man, thank god for Netflix.

If you haven't already, follow the link in my review of First Spaceship On Venus to the review of The Stuff. The recent B-Movie Webmasters Roundtable was all based around Blob movies and The Stuff was one of the more coveted titles. Extremely funny movie.

I remember going into the Horror section of the video store with my mom and looking at the boxes (they had those plastic VHS movie boxes at that time.. they were larger than the paper/cardboard boxes that later became prominent) and thinking about how scary the movies were. I remember movies like Curtains, The Amityville Horror, Xtro, Basket Case, etc... Having total nightmares strictly on the basis of the photos on the movie boxes. I think the coolest movie i saw as a kid was called "The Stuff". That was a crazy movie and some awesome mid-80's horror. What made me search for this blog.. was that I saw Deathproof a few nights ago and googled the term "Grindhouse". And from there I found this blog. Now my netflix list is filled with movies like Vanishing Point and Videodrome. Thanks again!
