Rumour has it that the Tony Scott project will actually be a sequel and not a remake... IMDB.com has Michael Beck and members of the other cast reprising their roles!

I just bought the Blu-ray version of The Warriors and I'm not sure if I like the comic book effects that they've added... I'll keep my original DVD release so I have both versions!

The Director's Cut isn't very good when compared to the original, in my opinion. The only nice thing about it is the digital remastering, really, though I still much prefer the original because I really dislike the changes. They were all done in such a way that they stood out so badly against the original footage, even after the digital remastering.

The most glaring change was the intro; instead of that classic opening shot of the neon Wonder Wheel at night, there was a brightly coloured, comic book style, "animated" intro going into the story of Xenophon's "Anabasis" instead. The scene transitions were done in a similar style. Whereas the original had sharp, page turning transitions, the Director's Cut completely changed that by freezing a scene, rendering it into a rotoscoped comic book panel, pulling back and moving over to another rendered comic book panel, which would then un-render into the live footage, unfreeze and start the new scene. It's an interesting trick but I think that it ultimately falls flat in "The Warriors", possibly because it's just a little too bright, slick and polished for so dark and gritty a film.

I was also irritated that they didn't offer the extended television intro, or any of the other deleted scenes for that matter, as an extra. Not only does it state how many Warriors there are, but it introduces each of the nine main Warriors by name and explains their purpose in going to the conclave. Because it is so expository it doesn't seamlessly fit in with the rest of the film very well, but it would have made an interesting extra. However, while it's not included on the DVD I do have a digital copy of this extended intro. If you're still interested in seeing it, go ahead and drop me a line.

JC, you can just click on his name and it will link you to his site.

A couple of years back they released a Director's Cut DVD and I neglected to pick it up. I don't know what was changed, all I know is that there are these comic book style transitions from scene to scene, whatever that means.

I was really hoping that they would add the TV opening to the DVD but they didn't. I've only heard about it. Apparently, it adds a little more back story to the Warriors and suggests that there are many more members of the gang other than the 9 who go to the meeting with Cyrus. I've been offered bootlegs of it in the past but there hasn't been any follow through. I'm also wondering what else was cut out of it. I saw it on TV back in the 80's and it is exactly as I remember it on video. Then again, the UHF channels weren't much for editing their movies.

Retro, where did you see the Directors Cut? Is that the version that comes on the DVD? I believe i have only seen the theatrical version. I did not realize the Warriors was adapted from a book in the 1960's. I am thinking about reading the book, although i read that it differs greatly from the film. Retroman... what is the URL of your blog or website?

The Warriors is simply one of the greatest movies ever made in my opinion. It's what I call a comfort movie because I can literally watch it over and over again and still enjoy it as much each time. It's sitting on my iPod video. That's rare for me and most movies. It has a very "Escape from New York" vibe and atmosphere to it. I love that you never see any pedestrians on the street it's truly owned by the gangs at night. And of course the Cyrus speech is one of the greatest screen speeches ever. "Can you count, suckers? I say the future is ours...If you can count." I agree with Bryan that I don't think a remake could ever do this film justice. This was truly a hyper reality of gang life. I mean even in the 70's they didn't have baseball gangs and mimes because those gangs would have been beaten up or shot in a drive by. The director's cut even emphasizes this comicbook style more with comicbook transitions.

"Riffs! Who are the warriors? There must be some word. I want them all. I want all the.... Warriors. I want them alive, if possible - if not, wasted! But I want them. Send the word."

I'm trying to find a little time to do them, but I have three of the Joe D'Amato Emanuelle movies on the chopping block next. If you're unfamiliar, they're completely insane, extraordinarily sleazy soft-porn (or hard porn depending on which version you see)/horror/shock movies.
