Sadly I have to say there is nothing more than what's on the surface. Tim Roth and Naomi watts' characters were so empty (though the emotion portrayed seemed real), there was simply not enough verbalization on their behalf. I recommend bug over this, as you get an insight to the insanity as well as great, strong characters and characterization. this is just hollow. More than entertainment, Haneke’s films are a commentary on our global society and its obsession with violence. Granted I have not seen the recent remake, I can assure you that the original release of "Funny Games" is one of the most shocking and relevant films in recent years. My girlfriend and I both fell asleep at various points throughout the less than gripping 'adventure' and we had to leave early as it just became too insulting to our intelligence to stay. I agree with the first sentence of the above review - most people probably would hate this movie but for me It didn't go anywhere and didn't leave any impression. It had no substance and consequently I had limited concern for any of the characters. If there was any plot development, It escaped me! I can honestly say that this film has earned the honour of being the most dismal and banal load of tripe that I've ever been aquainted with. But it does make some hard statements about our society perception of violence. But most of America just wants to watch Shrek 3 and stay asleep. Did ya get the reference to They Live?
