I was sorely dissapointed by 30 Days of Night also. The illustrations are gorgeous, but when it all comes down to it, I need a good storyline to keep me reading. The Walking Dead WAS a good comic, it has that sort of bare-bones survivalist theme that I want from any zombie story.

Have you checked out The Goon? Any Hellboy fan would love it, and Mike Mignola occasionally does a guest appearance there. Imagine Sluggo from Nancy all grown up and running a gang in a town full of zombies. It's pretty awesome.

Yeah, I've been reading Walking Dead since issue 7 and love it. Only reason I didn't mention it above is because I figured I'd probably done so at Horrornews a couple times, at least.

I didn't try Invincible for the same reason you didn't try Jonah Hex. I like to start at the beginning, too. The thing with JH is that it seems to be just a string of one shot stories.

Dark Horse's Conan is really good too.

Dave, if you're not already, you really ought to look up the trades from The Walking Dead. I'm a little burned out on zombies, but everything about that series is so right. One of the guys I make the bi-weekly comic run with argues that the tension is so unrelenting that he can't stand to read it, but it's that element that I find most appealing. It is a seriously outstanding series. The first couple dozen issues are where it's at.

Also, I mention Invincible, by the writer of The Walking Dead. The first twelve or so issues of that book qualify as one of the best superhero books I've read in recent memory. It combines everything about Spiderman and Superman that attracted me to those books when I was a kid and makes me remember why I liked them so much.

I've flirted with Jonah Hex but I have a real hard time picking up books in the middle of an arc. It really hinders me from jumping into books that I want to look up but I just can't dive into an already established continuity. Right now I'm hung up on a bunch of limited serieses. The Umbrella Academy, My Chemical Romance connections aside, has been quite good and ends this month. The Lobster Johnson book that also just wrapped up was terrific and the new Abe Sapien book is also looking up to be excellent.

Scud is also back to end the series for good, which warms my heart.

Cool, I hadn't heard about this one. I'll have to look into it. I have been getting some comics each week the last few months myself. Like yourself, I'm somehow always drawn back, but I'm keeping my purchases to a minimum. No more than $50 a month (which of course doesn't go anyhwhere near as far as it used to... ).

From what little I've been reading, Marvel is actually looking better than DC for superheroes these days. The whole Planet Hulk/World War Hulk storyline was dynamite and I'm really digging Thor and Daredevil now. Back at DC, I really like the current Jonah Hex book as well, and you might want to take a look at Simon Dark. I was hesitant because I'm so sick of Steven Niles practically getting to corner the horror book market after 30 Days, but I took a chance because I like Scott Hampton's art. So far, so good....
