Donnie Darko 2: The Legend of Curly’s Gold

Donnie Darko sequelI’m not one of the Donnie Darko fanclub. That bubbling cauldron of speculation as to just what the fuck that movie was about.  That dungeon of discussion about which version of the movie is the better version.  The theatrical cut or the director’s cut (answer: director’s cut).  I like it, but Donnie is a movie that I have a hard time sitting through on multiple viewings.  I can certainly appreciate its place in the pantheon of young cult movies, though.  There was a time when I thought that cult was going the way of the videotape but a movie like this proves me so very wrong.

So why don’t you all join me as we scratch our heads, mired in confusion.  To what purpose does a Donnie Darko sequel serve?  Aside from making money from Donnie’s more simple-minded fans who just think that Jake is dreamy, that is.  Aside from morbid fan curiosity that didn’t have the sense to just download the fucking thing from The Pirate Bay rather than fork over their hard earned duckets.

S. Darko is the name and producers are out on the prowl in the international market looking for money to make a sequel starring Daveigh Chase, who played Donnie’s younger sister in the original.  I couldn’t possibly even begin to guess what it could be about aside from a shot in the dark that it has something to do with time travel.  What’s more, Richard Kelly isn’t involved at all, which is probably for the best but I wonder what his thoughts are on the subject.

Finally! All the answers to my questions about Sparkle Motion will be revealed! And all it took was an unnecessary sequel!

And here I was; beginning to question your dedication to Sparkle Motion.

Perhaps it’ll be more like Harvey this time, and focus on the role of pooka and their influence on mortals. You know.. They’re very fond of rum-pots, crackpots, and how are you, Mr. White?

Yeah it’s an obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of the cult hit. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a direct-to-DVD release. I enjoyed the first movie (original version not director’s cut.) and think there’s no reason to continue the storyline.

Also what is up with Kelly? Domino was weak at best and I heard that his Southland Tales was a jumbled mess. Though I still have it in my queue to check out for myself.
