I've had a couple of chances to check out Frontier(s) lately and I just don't know if I'm up to the task. I've been hung up on France for a couple of years now but oddly enough, I'm trying to steer clear of the horror stuff. Today I watched OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies and it qualifies as one of the funniest movies I've seen in a very long time. It's also French and features no one being disemboweled. I think I can live with that.

Just watched this tonight, and I was left feeling the same way. I'm all for novel and amusing ultra-violence, but usually only if there's a little nod to the audience that it's all in good fun. But 'Inside' is pretty full-on straight-ahead gruesomeness and it's pretty serious about the whole thing, too, which makes all the build-up of suspense so unpleasant at the end. (And I say that while at the same time admiring the effects--really well done. So well done, in fact, that they're fairly off-putting at the same time) I'm in total agreement about the end, too--I don't want to spoil anything, but let's say one minute I was cheering a moment later I was ready to turn the movie off just minutes before it ended because I saw how the climax was going to play out. Despite all that...I'm still going to give Frontier(s) and 2005's Them a chance.

I shared this with some friends over the weekend, having seen it once by myself and feeling like I shouldn't be the only one burdened with it. They assured me that they were not squeamish and were amused by Ichi the Killer (a movie I do not like, even though I like a lot of Miike films). It was almost funny how quiet the room was when À l'intérieur finished; I've never seen hardened gore fans quite so speechless.

Having made the unfortunate (and completely accidental) choice to see À l'intérieur, Deadened, and My Wife is a Gangster in the span of three weeks, I could only say how the hell did I end up with all this violence against pregnant women at once?

I loved "Inside." It's easily one of the most disturbing flicks I've seen recently, far surpassing both "Sheitan" and "Frontier(s)" in terms of viciousness and unease. And I seriously doubt I'll ever watch it again.
