Wolverines??? MGM to remake Red Dawn.

I’ve been tolerant of remakes since the wave started gaining momentum mostly because there’s nothing I can do about them, people seem to like remakes and no one’s forcing me to see them but this has gone far enough.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that MGM has two more on the slate, one that could potentially be cool and one that boggles the fucking mind. First up is Robocop. As much as I love Verhoeven’s original and as much as I consider it the perfect cyberpunk movie, I’ve been watching it here and there over the last few years and realize that it’s still pretty relevant. The 80’s was a great time for that sort of speculative fiction and our present social conditions are startlingly similar to the 80’s. The right script could really recapture that magic.
Red Dawn, however, isn’t particularly relevant. MGM also announced that this cold war fantasy is on the slate to be remade and as much as it confuses me, I’m seriously curious as to what their plans are. By the time this movie came out in the 80’s, we were all pretty much resigned to the fact that swarms of Soviet missiles would come in the night and burn us all off of the globe but in case you haven’t been paying attention, the Soviet Union isn’t the Soviet Union anymore nor are they necessarily our enemy so who the hell could possibly stage an invasion of the Southwestern states in this remake? Al-Qaeda? I seriously hope not. And who’s going to fight them even if they do? I get the feeling that most high schoolers these days would be too busy texting everyone on earth to notice a massive enemy invasion force let alone hide in the mountains and take up arms against them. I mean. How many bars could you possibly get up in the Rocky’s?

Honestly, I thought the first one was bad enough… but I know that someone’s going to do his best to stoke some pro-war fervor in the assumption that we’re in it for the long haul… recruitment film, anyone?
First off, RED DAWN rocks! one hell of a movie. My brother and i spent our childhood just waiting for the U.S.S.R. to invade. I am not a big fan of remakes but I always said if i had a big MGM budget that we would remake Red Dawn. As far as the time period I hope they keep it based in the 80’s. If the plot is based in the present day, MGM better take in account the border fence that Bush is trying to build on the Mexican boarder. this fence would have little to no impact to the invading forces from South America but, it’s real important that notice how fucking stupid it is. Well MGM you got your hands full don’t let us down on this one.
Oh by the way here are a few guys that are ready to fight any invading force on American soil, Al-Qaeda or U.S.S.R.
The political climate of the 80’s was so important to the plot of so many war and action movies of that time period that remaking any of them would be difficult without setting them anywhere other than the 80’s. I have a real hard time understanding how they could do this movie in a modern setting since foreign relations is such a touchy subject these days not to mention that there really isn’t an international boogeyman that filmmakers could use to put a face on the enemy in a Red Dawn remake.
