Man, I am bound to piss someone off with this post. Have you ever read any of the Star Wars expanded universe stuff? That is to say any of the official books and comics and shit that Lucasfilm has approved to be a part of the Star Wars canon without being in any of the movies? It’s fucking awful. It all very nearly qualifies as fan fiction were it not for it being published into the mass market. I gave expanded universe a couple of shots before I dismissed it forever, but this upcoming horror novel from Joe Schreiber is just what it might take to get me to give expanded universe a break and try again.
There isn’t a whole lot of news going around about Deathtroopers except that it’s a Star Wars horror novel. To the left there is the cover that was posted at the Star Wars website a couple of days ago. Word is, it’s for Star Wars fans who also happen to be fans of The Shining and Alien. So… Could it be a haunted star destroyer? A creature running wild on some storm troopers on a remote outpost? Any way you slice it, I’m actually looking forward to this book. The bad news? This bitch doesn’t hit shelves until October.

This sounds pretty good! I’ve skipped most of the expanded universe stuff, but I do remember reading and enjoying “Shadows of the Empire”. I read it because it was the basis of the N64 game of the same name. On the timeline I think it fell between Empire and Jedi. I’d say give it a read if you haven’t.

Actually, Shadows of the Empire was one of the books that turned me off to the whole Expanded Unverse thing. Seemed like chapter after chapter of Chewie and Lando going off to rescue Luke from whatever situation he had gotten himself into.

I really enjoyed some of the old video games from about 10-15 years back, when I used to be into that stuff. I read a couple novels and some comics and while I don’t recall hating any of it, nothing really grabbed me and made me stick with it either. As both a SW nerd and a horror buff, though, this sure looks interesting. Thanks for pointing it out!
