They hardly even address it in the movie. There are a couple of suggestions that Eli may not be a girl but they just don’t explore it much. It’s not really the point of the movie and was removed for editorial reasons.

If you want to know about Eli’s back story read the book by John Ajvide Lindqvist, there is a lot more explained than in the film.

upon reading this review, i procured the movie and watched the shit out of it. what a much needed breath of fresh blood-scented air. never before have a 12 year old sociopath and a 200 year old castrato fit together so beautifully. that’s a sentence i never thought i’d have to put together. that’s some personal boundary-pushing art haha.

i need to check your site more often, bryan. this summer you’re coming to manch for a bbq where seth and deb moved in below me. there’s no room for negotiation in this matter.

I just picked this up on DVD, and this film lives up to the hype. This film must be seen in Swedish with English subtitles (the DVD loads assuming you want dubbed English. You don’t) in order to get the full impact of the characters.

The relationship between Oskar and Eli is both creepy and touching at the same time. And agreed: when the bad guys get their comeuppance…yikes.
I freeze-framed the scene described above (on the nature of Eli’s gender) and STILL couldn’t understand what the hell was doin’ down there.

This one is very special. A must-own if vampires are your thing, and especially if you are looking for a fresh take on the genre.
