After the announcement of Night of the Creeps’ inevitable release in October, I was hard pressed to find a movie on my list of DVDs that still had yet to be released as just about anything you could want, no matter how obscure, exists somewhere on the North American DVD market. Except, that is, for Phantasm 2. The Phantasm movies are full of strange lapses in logic yet they somehow manage to wind up “totally sweet” thanks to a handful of iconic ideas that somehow excuse fatal flaws about alien planets, other dimensions and smooshed reanimated corpses that become The Tall Man’s servants. Who gives a shit? There are those sweet flying orbs, a modded 4 barrel shotgun and a flame thrower! Yet of them all, Universal has sat on the second part in the series, my favorite of them all. Until now.
Leave it to Dan Taylor, who I tend to spend a lot of time comiserating about unreleased movies with, to point this out, but come this September, Universal will finally cut the shit and release Phantasm 2 in preparation of the October release season among a menu of 40 horror titles. Video Business has posted their Halloween purchasing guide and among it, at the bottom, is a sampling of Universal’s late Q3 schedule. Among those, for the first time on DVD, is Phantasm 2.
