Inglourious Basterds Italian Poster

Now that’s a movie poster! I’ve read a lot about this flick while it was showing at Cannes and early reviews were not favorable. Ain’t It Cool News seemed to be the only source on Earth proclaiming it the best Tarantino flick since Pulp Fiction, but it has long been speculated that Harry Knowles would gladly fellate both Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino simultaneously given the opportunity. Poor reviews, aside, they still have plenty of time to trim the bloat before it reaches the mass market and in the meantime, they’re priming their Italian public with this kick ass poster featuring the titular Basterds as well as some flygirls and a dastardly Nazi. Why Italy gets this sweet piece of pop-art and we get a helmet on a baseball bat is beyond me. Click on the poster for an even bigger version to feast upon with your eyes.

    That is a goddam masterpiece!
Most people wouldn’t know good design if it bit them in the ass, I’m pretty sure that’s why we Americans are getting the dumbed down version.

I’ll defend the reasoning on it. US press slaps a poster on every wall every bus and every bum who wraps himself in newspaper to stay warm. The truth is we brow beat our audience and I’d hate that done to a good poster. Eventually you get so over exposed to a poster here that you try to avoid looking at it and end up seeing shapes… that’s why so many posters in the US are 1 object on a pretty solid color background… because its a quick reference point that you can’t escape. Now Italian posters have a bit more class in that they don’t brow beat their audience as much so they can appreciate the image when they see it. In the same respect… only hardcore film people look at foreign people… and you know Tarentino in particular airs to the majority while playing to the minority and loves esoterica. So yeah, in part it’s because of how we use posters here… in part Tarentino loves for most people to miss things about his work and so making cool foreign posters just gives a nod to the hardcore movie fans who share his pov and that is definately part of his MO.
