I know where you're coming from Bryan. Whenever a film like 'Antichrist' is released, part of me wants to go and see it and part of me definitely doesn't. In theory, I'd love to see what all the fuss is about... but maybe tonight I'll just stay in and watch 'The Wizard of Oz' instead.

For my thoughts on 'Antichrist', 'Hostel' and cine-torture in general, take a look at http://matineeidle.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/cine-torture/

@Retroman The thing with the kid is really only the first 10 minutes of the film. After that, you never see him, or hear about him. In fact,, really any horrible tragedy could have been put in that first sequence, and it would have little to no effect on the rest of the film.
But I agree, I would only call this horror in the dictionary definition of "something that inspires dislike; something horrible". Horror flicks should be fun, either in the campy way, or in the spine-tingling/terrifying way. This film was neither. Not to say it was a *bad* movie; the acting was all great; the score, the effects, the atmosphere all did it's job very well. It's just that it's job was to create the most surreal, unsettling, and unwelcoming environment possible, even when there was no reason for it. It seemed half the time the score ramped up it was, as mentioned, for no reason other than to keep you on your toes.
I certainly see where people get that this film was just Lars' misogyny put to film, but I thought the very last shots had He paying for that. He had put off all his grief until that moment, and combined with the events of the film, it's as if she passed on her madness and obsessions to him. Of course, I could be wrong, I usually am.
Like I said, it isn't bad, but even for all it's great performances and boundary-over-stepping, it isn't no way a great film. It's not even one of Lars' best. It won't make any Top ## lists, save for the Most Shocking Films, and Most Cringeworthy Scenes lists. It serves it's purpose, and does it's job well, but ultimately it will live and die in the arthouse, where it belongs.
Though I am looking forward to hearing the fox's "Chaos reigns" line in every trance and post-metal album for the next 5 years.

Nah I'm done being depressed by films. I like my horror fun and over the top campy these days. Just the idea of losing your child is unbearable since I have 3 kids I can't deal with movies that have that as a central theme.
