So far, it’s called Grant Morrison: The Documentary Film…

kill your boyfriend… And I’d probably be okay with it if they called it that upon release. Last year I did a review of the Alan Moore talking head picture, The Mindscape of Alan Moore (review), which allowed Alan to explain himself in his own language, which turned out to be as complicated and abstract as you imagined. So if trying to wrap your head around Alan Moore’s warped worldview wasn’t hard enough, here’s another documentary on the way about another UK comic writer with a boner for the occult and psychedelic drugs.

Grant Morrison isn’t a hermit like Moore is, so he has a tendency to be a lot more entertaining even though he’s a seriously heavy dude. He also differs from Moore in that he manages to not take things too seriously and maintains a healthy working relationship with the majors so that he can get away with heavy comics like The Invisibles and We3 while still kicking ass on heavy traffic mainstream books like X-Men and All-Star Superman (which is the shit, y’all). Like Moore, though, he’s fucking fascinating and has a really unique perspective on practically everything. How a guy like Grant Morrison manages to walk that tightrope and be the Hunter Thompson (or is it Spider Jerusalem) of comics is a mystery to me but his comics are the sort of thought provoking things that total fucking weirdos like me can read and see so much depth and abstract thought at play while your typical Comic Book Guy can pick up an issue, read it, thrill to it and bag it and board it like the best of them.

Premiering in July at the next San Diego Comic Con will be this documentary, entitled for the moment, Grant Morrison: The Documentary Film. Wired has a couple of clips about the upcoming picture and you can see them right here. And while you wait with baited breath for the rest of the picture, I recommend you run out and bag a copy of Grant’s one-shot, Kill Your Boyfriend.

    Hey Bryan,
Thanks for mentioning the doc. As the producer on the doc, I’m excited about where it’s going.
I thought you might also be interested in a webseries that Respect Films is producing called The Third Age. It’s something of a psychedelic sci-fi, and is largely influenced by Morrison’s work. It definitely has some magical elements that are an important part of the show. You can see all the episodes at http://www.thethirdagebegins.com
Would love to hear what you think.
