Who ever says this movie was amazing, hasn't seen a realy good epic movie. Explanation to the plot is one and a half hour long out of 1:45 playtime. The best scene, is before the "Solomon Kane" appears on the screen. The story goes fck all, and ends with faith, love and sacrifice/redemption to God kind of bullshit. a hypocritical "protagonists" actually goes to kill everyone to save his sorry ass. He is saving his soul while being selfish! Fck yah, Solomon kane.
Ending made me rage. A huge fire demon from Hell, comes to break your bones Kane! Yet he dodges him as if he has played too much "Shadow of Colossus" Deamon breaks 2 pillars, Kane stand if front of a mage. WHy mage pushes the girl away when he could kill her??? And then God blasts evil guys away and Kane survives! yay kiddy movie. Utter utter crap. I wanted my money back

Actually, the idea that I was trying to get across there was that the dark fantasy setting usually has this long, long ago vibe to it where it seems thousands of years old instead of hundreds. It seemed so out of place in this movie but like I said, nitpicking and semantics. The movie is totally awesome and very dark.

I enjoyed this, but it is too dark to get any mainstream traction, which is a real pity. It had its problems, but you are on the money about the set-pieces (the sword fighting is terrific) and I am glad to see the movie never holds back when it might have been tempted to (the crucifixion scene being a great example). I did have three grumbles: the main villain (the sorcerer) was totally under-used, the identity of the masked bad guy was pretty obvious and the final fight did not use the devil's reaper, despite his great introduction at the start.

On a side note, I think you are underestimating what a nasty place the world still was in the 16th and 17th century. Sure, it's post renaissance, but monarchies were still alive and well, so was religious persecution and superstition. Yes, it was a bit dark, but not altogether inaccurate.

Purefoy was utterly fantastic as Marc Antony is HBO's "Rome." I wasn't too interested in this until I read that he's the one playing Kane.
