I was fortunate enough to see a sneak preview last week of the Finnish film "Rare Exports." The official website is here: http://www.rareexportsmovie.com/en with trailers and downloads therein. It should be in wider if limited release real soon.

Yes, it does have that Old School European Santa of the ilk you mention here, not, as one of the kids in the movie declares, "the Coca-Cola Santa." I am testifying that this is the should-see movie for Christmas. I itch to give a recap, but I also want everyone to keep their thrill of discovery. Let's just say the reveal of Santa Claus got the whole crowd to spontaneously whoop and applaud. Concerning presentation, it's top-notch for an ostensibly low budget, and you can feel the love the developers have for with what they're playing. If there's anything to critique, it's that there is the opportunity to expand based upon omissions: for example, the sponsor that conducts the initial excavation has a preset set of rules of engagement, which beggars the question as to how they were established. A glaringly noticeable detail, yes, but it also foments thirst for other additions to the series of the "Rare Export" anthology.

If you haven't seen them already, the two short films the creators developed that launched this feature length film are available on YouTube: Part 1 ("Just before the first snow of winter falls, professional hunters begin their work. The long process of tracking, hunting and transforming this king of the forest into a finished product is a time consuming process, but the final outcome is a reason to celebrate") is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei69bYwwCvc . The "Training Session" that begins at 4:22 is worth replaying to others. Part 2 (Safety Instructions) is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkyqODDF-LU , and as it says at the 5:25 mark: "What you are about to see now may traumatize you for life, but the story must be told." The "Rules of Conduct" established at 2:55 is a standalone joy in itself.

There's also a "bait-and-switch" trailer for the movie here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pH9IyqTk1E&NR=1 .
