As a HUGE fan of the comic I think it's hard to seriously comment on this show with out admitting having clouded eyes. I thought the Pilot was one of the best Zombie stories ever filmed. Seriously. It was scary. That is not something that I can say about most horror stories, films, etc. The scene where Rick is traversing the hospital staircase with nothing but a match for light seriously had me at the edge of my seat. It also hit most of the right chords when it came to making an emotional connection with the audience. Rick's breakdown in his house seemed like a rational reaction to coming to grips with the type of nightmare world he had awoken in, and was a great touch. Unfortunately I feel that it was all downhill from there, a hill that may have veered into a cliff actually. None of the following episodes ever invoked that same sense of fear, or carried the emotional impact that the pilot had. It all deteriorated into a melodrama, with the occasional horde of zombies. The series lacked the somber semi realistic minimalistic overtone that the source material accomplished, and instead replaced it with a bunch of actors doing their best to so how HUGE their acting chops are. But again, as a huge fan of the comic my opinion I am sure is very biased.
