I have to disagree with the review and the comments. I don't think there is anything wrong with a movie actually attempting to explain the origins of its characters or expand on its backstory. Phantasm 4 is pretty entertaining and, honestly, the time travel scene with the Tall Man as Jebodiah kept me watching. I was really hoping for more explanation. While this series isn't "sci fi" technically, I really wish more films took the original concept of sci fi - writing fiction based on science and actually explaining the science behind it. I want to know where the Tall Man came from, why, what the spheres are, etc. Leaving it up to my imagination is just never as exciting to me as actually making it part of the story..I know I'm probably in the minority with that opinion though.

Phantasm II is indeed a fun sequel. If you liked the first you should give it a watch some time. Just pretend 3 and 4 didn't happen.

Phantasm 4 is quite the mess and I totally agree with your review. Several times I thought something might happen and.... nothing. Easily the less of the series. I would highly recommend Phantasm 2, though I'll admit a bias since it was the first one I saw. 2 has fun, some horror and action. 3 is ... ok but lacks the action or suspense of 2. But after 2 you just had to see what happened. Then 3 ends and you are in the same boat.
