I think the writers for True Blood need to look at how The Gates and Being Human have worked. I'm done with the show though. There is no season four in my world. Season 1 was great, then it went downhill from there to the point of no return for me.

They've reached the point where the books goes in a bunch of different directions. It started as 1 threat with minor sub plots... to multiple books and books of short stories ( many without Sookie ). Not giving away any spoilers... this is about where the stories really starts expanding into a universe... and they failed to change formats along with the book. Instead of 13 hour long series... they should have done 39 20 minute episodes (3 20 min 13 episode series) plus the 13 hour long just for (Sookie/ Bill/ Eric).

This would have been true to form... and they could have made a line up of shorter episodes of side series... It would have made a lot more sense and given them an excuse to pull the universe in different directions.

Hopefully if they do season four they either keep to the Sookie story... or they make multiple series like the books did.

I almost want to read some of the books, just out of curiosity to see where the side stories go, and get an idea of what was kept, cut, and changed for the show. I still like Eric a lot, but Bill and Sookie...UGH. I agree the Jesus and Lafayette story was compelling, and seemingly better filmed and acted than the others. Maybe they should drop True Blood and create a Lafayette spinoff called 'Hooker Bitch and the Witch.'

I'm actually going to take the low road on the comment you make about Six Feet Under. I loved that show, but somewhere in the last couple of seasons the story had been told and we were plunged into this over the top drama involving stolen bodies, an affair, Nate's "daughter" the suicide, etc. I feel like this may be a pattern for Ball and his writers. Unless they rein it in, shit goes off the rails quick. True Blood is all about excess, though. Needs more Dark Shadows and less Days Of Our Lives. It got so out of hand after the story had clearly been told and while I feel like True Blood has a lot of room to move, the story has pretty much been told. That is, unless they widen the scope and start making bigger stories out of side characters. Bill, Sookie and Eric are completely out of gas and the saddest thing for me this season is that my favorite side stories were Jesus and Lafayette and Hoyt and Jessica. How awful is that?
